The ruling United Russia party has called on President Dmitry Medvedev to halt construction of a disputed motorway.

The building of the toll road has sparked protests amid environmental concerns.

The decision by United Russia is the latest indication the party is keeping an eye on the growing protest movement in the country.

The road planned to link Moscow and St Petersburg threatens a forest in Khimki outside the Russian capital.

Feeling is running high in Khimki against the motorway. In July 500 youths attacked the town hall.

Protests culminated last Sunday with a concert to protect the forest organised by Russia’s top rock star Yuri Shevchuck.
