Moldovan police find uranium haul

world news

| |

Police in Moldova have arrested three people after seizing nearly two kilos of uranium.

Tests showed it was uranium 238, which does not emit radiation that poses a danger to the environment, nor is it any use for making nuclear weapons.

Two of those detained were former police officers, several others are still being sought.

Moldova is one of Europe’s poorest states and stands at a crossroads between East and West. EU officials have said it is vulnerable to all types of smuggling.

Officers also discovered a cache of hundreds of weapons along with the uranium, including guns and grenades.
