China’s worst air disaster for several years has left 43 people dead and questions as to why the pilot over shot the runway at one of the country’s newest airports.
Fifty-three survived the crash in northeast China despite the plane breaking up into three parts and bursting into flames.
Yichun airport in Heilongjiang province only opened last year. It is one of several new facilities responding to a growing demand for air travel.
The injured were quickly taken to local hospitals, most were suffering from broken limbs cuts and burns.
One man managed to get out at the front of the plane as soon as it stopped moving.” I felt a bump in the back of the plane,” he said, “ then the inside began to fall apart.”
China has escaped major incidents of this nature in recent years thanks to relatively young fleets of aircraft and stricter safety rules.
