Romanian diplomat accused of spying

A senior Romanian diplomat has been arrested in Moscow accused of espionage according to the Russian security service.

The FSB said Gabriel Grecu was caught ‘red-handed’ trying to obtain military intelligence from a Russian citizen.

The FSB, which emerged from the soviet-era KGB, claimed Grecu was a member of the Romanian intelligence service working undercover as the First Secretary of his embassy’s political department in Moscow.

Agents claim he had what they called ‘spy equipment’, though they did not go into any further detail.

Romania, which is a member of the EU and NATO, has not made any comment.

Shortly after his arrest, Grecu was declared ‘persona non grata’ and given 48 hours to leave the country.

The move follows the detention in the United States of 10 undercover Russian agents in June.
