Facebook pictures cause storm in Middle East

Former Israeli soldier Eden Abergil has posted controversial images on her facebook page.

The pictures are in an album called ‘the best days of my life’ and have prompted international outrage across the political spectrum.

Army officials have condemned her behaviour as “shameful” and said they would investigate the matter further.

“The IDF strongly condemns these disgraceful photos. They in no way reflect the spirit of IDF, our ethical standards to which we all aspire. If she were on active duty I would imagine that she would be court-martialed right away,” said Barak Raz, IDF spokesman

The Palestinian reaction has been equally forthright. The row has erupted just a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hopes for direct negotiations with the Palestinians in the near future.

“Is a typical example of how the Israeli army and the Israeli occupation is about humiliating and oppressing the Palestinian people. But also it’s an example that shows that the Israeli occupation also corrupts the Israelis,” stressed Ghassan Khatib a Palestinian government spokesman

The pictures have since been removed from the site while Abergil has been reported as saying she did not imagine they would be problematic.
