A singer from the German girl band No Angels has gone on trial in Darmstadt, south of Frankfurt, accused of having sex with several partners without warning them she was HIV positive.
Nadja Benaissa has admitted to unprotected sex with several partners without warning them she was HIV-positive and apologised to the court. However she has denied deliberately infecting anyone.
The 28-year-old faces a charge of grievous bodily harm for allegedly giving the disease to one man. She is appearing before a juvenile court because her infection happened when she was 17.
The band No Angels were discovered in 2000 during the TV talent show, Popstars. They are Germany’s most successful girl band and sold five million albums from 2000 to 2003.
Most recently the band reformed to represent Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest two years ago when they came last. The singer could be jailed for a maximum of ten years. The trial is scheduled to last five days.
