Stand-off over Kaczynski cross

Several thousand people have held a rally in Warsaw to protest against an impromptu wooden cross put up in the memory of the late President Lech Kaczynski.

The demonstrators used the social networking
site Facebook to organise those who oppose the location of the memorial.

The cross was erected outside the presidential palace by scouts after the recent air crash which killed the president, but the authorities object to it standing in front of a secular official building.

It was scheduled to be moved to a nearby church last week but after violent protests by supporters who claimed moving it would be an insult, the authorities backed down.
