A bell was tolled marking the moment 65 years ago when the US exploded an atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Nagasaki.

An estimated 80,000 people were killed with another several hundred thousand diseased and dying due to the radiation.

It was the second such explosion coming only three days after the first nuclear detonation at Hiroshima, in effect bringing an end to the Second World War.

Today’s ceremony included a minute silence for the victims.
