France's "Maigret" dies in Paris

The popular actor Bruno Cremer, who was best known for playing the role of Inspector Maigret, on French television has died in a Paris hospital at the age of 80.

Cremer played the pipe-smoking French police detective in 54 episodes. They were screened in several countries across Europe from 1991 to 2005.

He also had a celebrated cinema career which began in the 1950s, specialising in military and later espionage films and appeared with many leading French actors of the time.

In his autobiography “A Certain Young Man”, Cremer said he was 12-years old when he decided to be an actor and it was all he’d ever wanted to be.

Cremer had been suffering from cancer for several years.
