BP is calling it a “significant milestone”. Others say let’s wait and see.

The oil giant is reporting good progress after starting its operation to permanently plug its underwater well in the Gulf of Mexico.

The gusher was temporarily capped two weeks ago, but over the next month the so-called “static kill” operation will try to close off the well for good.

The full magnitude of the spill has now become apparent. Revised figures show 4.9 million barrels of oil leaked until the well was temprarily capped.
