Border clashes have broken out between Israel and Lebanon, with reports of soldiers killed. The UN is pleading with both countries to show maximum restraint.

The Reuters news agency quotes witnesses as saying that two Lebanese soldiers have died. The French AFP agency says three Lebanese soldiers have been killed.

Five other Lebanese soldiers are reported to have been wounded.

Hezbollah’s Al Manar television reports that an Israeli officer has also been killed. Israeli helicopters have been seen firing on Lebanese targets, one said to be an army post.

An armoured personnel carrier has reportedly been destroyed. There are conflicting reports on who started the clashes.
