Two suspected members of the militant Basque separatist group ETA have been arrested over the killing of a police sergeant seven years ago.
Detectives say they linked Gurutz Agirresarobe and his former partner Aitziber Ezkerra to the crime thanks to new developments in DNA testing.
The pair were arrested in the northern Basque town of Hernani.
A spokesman for the Basque Interior Ministry said the couple were part of a sleeper commando
cell unknown to the police. They waited for orders from a leader before taking action.
Joseba Pagazaurtundua was gunned down in 2003 at this cafe in the Basque country.
ETA has been severely crippled by joint Spanish and French action in recent years which has led to the arrest of many leading members.
The group’s leader was caught in February in northern France along with two senior ETA militants.
