"Costa del Crime" welcomes Obamas

It has been nicknamed the “Costa del Crime”, but that has not put off the US First Lady.

Michelle Obama is due in Spain this week for a summer holiday in a top hotel, but without her husband and only one of her daughters.

For some, the Costa del Sol has made a name for itself – rightly or wrongly – as a gangster and fraudster’s paradise.

But one local tourism official said on euronews that the visit was excellent news. He said it was “priceless promotion” and it will be good for attracting holidaymakers from right around the world, not just from North America.

Michelle Obama’s choice of hotel is at Benahavis near Marbella, where it is reported 30 rooms have also been booked for the First Lady’s entourage and security team.

Barack Obama has chosen to stay at home in the US, and their other daughter is at a summer camp.

While his wife enjoys the European sun, the president will reportedly celebrate his 49th birthday with friends in Chicago.
