The largest foreign military base in Afghanistan has come under rocket and ground attack by militants.
Authorities say half a dozen insurgents have been killed in a gunbattle after a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the base in the city of Kandahar.
They say several of the militants had explosives attached to them, and they unsuccessfully tried to enter the base.
The governor’s office in Kandahar said two rockets had also hit inside the base, wounding a soldier and some civilians.
Kandahar Air Field, on the outskirts of the city, is home to tens of thousands of troops and civilian workers.
