On time and as promised. In a speech to disabled American war veterans, the US President confirmed the withdrawal timetable.
“As a candidate for president I pledged to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end,” said Barack Obama.
“Shortly after taking office I announced a new strategy for Iraq, for a transition to full Iraqi responsibility and I made it clear that by August 31, 2010 America’s combat mission in Iraq would end,” he added.
The vast majority of the 65,000 US troops will remain in the country with a mission to train and support Iraqi security forces.
But Iraq’s political instability is raising fears that a full US pullout by the end of next year may not be possible.
