French mother charged with murder of eight babies

A French woman has been charged with the murder of eight newborn babies after reportedly admitting the crime to police.

The 47 year old mother of two has been named as Dominique Cottrez. She and her husband, also in his forties, were held in custody after the infants corpses were found in two sites in the village of Villers-au-Tertre, in the north of France.

So far Police are not thought to have charged Pierre-Marie Cottrez after his wife said he had no idea what she was doing.

The village’s mayor said: ‘‘She was somebody who hardly ever went out, who had quite a big problem with her weight, but in spite of that was very, very pleasant.’‘

Police became aware of the alleged murders after the new owners of a house previously owned by the couple stumbled across bones of two babies while gardening.

In what looks set to be France’s worst infanticide, prosecutors are due to hold a news conference later today.
