Security stepped up in Iraqi holy city

On the second day of a Shi’ite pilgrimage in the Iraqi holy city of Kerbala, security has been stepped up after a series of deadly bomb attacks.

Two explosions yesterday killed at least 19 people and wounded 54. Several hundred thousand pilgrims are expected in Kerbala this week.

The bomb attacks occurred despite the presence of thousands of troops and police on the streets.

The explosions took place about 20 kilometres south of Kerbala on the road from Najaf, also a Shi’ite holy city.
