War drills continue in the Sea of Japan despite North Korean threats

The United States and South Korea are continuing war drills in the Sea of Japan today despite threats from North Korea to engage in a “sacred war” should the manoeuvres go ahead.

The drills are aimed at boosting deterrence against the North, which the South accused of sinking one of its warships in March, killing 46 sailors.

They are set to continue all week, but many analysts believe Pyongyang will be wary of engaging in combat with the US and South Korean forces – the North’s conventional military equipment is obsolete and not thought to be any match for America’s forces, headed by the 97 000 tonne nuclear powered aircraft carrier the USS Washington.

One potential cause of conflict is South Korea’s declared intention to broadcast propaganda messages via loudspeakers across the military divide.
