As NATO-led forces continued looking for two missing American soldiers in Afghanistan, the Taliban say one was killed in a gunfight and they are holding the other captive.
A spokesman for the insurgents said they would decide what to do with him later. The claims cannot be verified independently.
Afghan officials have suggested the two servicemen were in Logar province south of Kabul. They were reported missing on Friday after failing to return in a vehicle they had taken from their compound in the capital.
It has been suggested that the soldiers ignored warnings or simply took a wrong turn before ending up in a Taliban-held area. Nato could not explain why they had left their base.
Earlier the US offered the equivalent of 15,000 euros for information about the pair. It comes as allied forces are suffering their highest casualties than in any summer since the invasion nine years ago.
