Four American soldiers have been killed in a bomb attack in southern Afghanistan.
There are few details of the incident. But it brings the total number of foreign troops killed since the conflict began in 2001 ever closer to the symbolically significant 2,000 mark. The figure now stands at 1,964.
So far this year, 396 foreign soldiers have lost their lives, more than 100 of them in June. Last month was the deadliest so far for foreign troops battling the Taliban.
Overall, US followed by British forces have borne the brunt of the casualties. The United States plans to start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan next year. The UK could do the same.
But the Taliban insurgency appears relentless and stabilising the country remains a huge challenge.
