At least one person has been killed and more than 40 injured after a popular tourist train derailed in the Swiss Alps.

The Glacier Express came off its tracks near a viaduct in the Goms Valley. The cause of the accident is still not known.

It’s thought most of the 200 passengers were tourists with Swiss media reporting many of those injured were Japanese – six seriously.

Swiss authorities launched a large scale rescue operation with seven helicopter crews at the scene to airlift the victims to hospital.

The Glacier Express travels through some of Europe’s most stunning alpine scenery and is one of Switzerland’s best known tourist trains.
