It was Thursday evening in the Iranian city of Zahedan and scores of Shia Muslims gathered at the central mosque to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed’s grandson.
But now at least 20 people lie dead – caught up in a double suicide bomb attack which targeted a nearby gathering of the elite Revolutionary Guard.
The Sunni Muslim rebel group Jundallah says it was behind the attack which was in revenge for Iran’s execution of their leader Abdolmalek Rigi in June.
The group has admitted being behind several attacks that have killed scores of people in recent years. 120 died in 2009 when Jundallah planted a bomb in another Shi’ite mosque in Zahedan.
