Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign policy chief, has been in Istanbul for talks with her Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu. The discussions included Iran, Turkish accession to the EU and of course, the fallout of the flotilla debacle.
Six weeks after 9 Turks died when Israel attacked an aid flotilla attempting to break the Gaza blockade, feelings still run high in Turkey and relations between the two countries are at an all-time low. Turkey has recalled its Ambassador from Tel Aviv and is demanding an apology and financial compensation for the families of the dead.
Ashton is due to visit Israel and Gaza on 17th July and it appears that both sides hope she will play something of an intermediary role in patching up the damage to relations between the two countries.
