Switzerland will not extradite Polanski to the US

The Oscar-winning film director Roman Polanski will not now be extradited to the US to face sentencing for an underage sex case dating back more than 30 years.
The 76-year-old was arrested at the request of the US authorities last September after he arrived in Switzerland to receive a lifetime achievement award.
After a short stint in jail, Polanski was put under house arrest at his luxury Swiss chalet, to await the outcome of legal proceedings .
Swiss officials gave several reasons for their extradition refusal, saying U.S. authorities had failed to provide confidential testimony from Polanski’s original sentencing in California.
They also said “national interests” were taken into consideration.
1977 and Polanski leaves court in the United States with his lawyers after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex with a thirteen-year-old girl.
He later fled to Europe just before his sentencing in 1978, fearing a judge might disregard his guilty plea and put him in prison for 50 years.
