Fugitive gunman Moat is dead say police sources

Fugitive gunman, Raoul Moat, has died, according to police sources. Early reports indicate that he shot himself. An ambulance took him to Newcastle General Hospital, but it is believed he was already dead.

Moat had been the run for a week after shooting his ex-girlfriend, her new partner and a police officer.

The drama unfolded in the town of Rothbury, where Moat had a six-hour stand-off with the police. Expert negotiators were brought in to speak with him.

Moat began his rampage 48 hours after being released from prison for assault. He shot dead his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, who he thought was a police officer. In a letter supposedly written by Moat, and published on the internet, he threatened to keep shooting officers until he was dead. No police were harmed during the stand-off.
