Spain parties while Germans look to future

So Paul the Octupus maintains his 100 percent record at predicting Germany’s World Cup fortunes.

He said Spain would win their semi-final, and they did to the joy of their fans. The national side has never got so far, and they’re over the moon. Spain expects now… the ultimate prize is just four days away.

Madrid was heaving after the final whistle, and few people there believe after getting this far their team will be denied by the Dutch on Sunday.

“It’s phenomenal, this is our world cup, we’re going to win for sure,” said one fan.

The reaction was an altogether different one in Germany. Despair was written on ther faces of everyone after their young team sat back deep and let the Spanish run at them. The tactic did not pay off, but time is on their side.

“Now we have to get third place, and when they come home we’ll party,” reflected one supporter. “Then there’s the euro, and there’ll be other world cups. It’s a young side.”

But that is for the future. In Durban a nation’s dreams died… to be reborn in Brazil in four years time.
