Police in Naples have arrested a man they say is one of Italy’s most wanted mobsters. Cesare Pagano is believed to be the head of one of the most powerful clans of the Camorra – the Naples version of the Sicilian Mafia.
The 42-year-old was arrested along with his nephew in an early morning raid on his seaside villa. He reportedly tried to escape but over 20 police had surrounded the mansion and he was caught.
The Camorra operates in Naples and the surrounding Campania region.
Pagano is wanted for a long list of crimes including murder, mafia association and drug trafficking. He is said to have led a bloody clan war a few years ago for control of Scampia, one of Naples’ poorest and most dangerous neighbourhoods.
The Amato-Pagano clan broke away from a rival gang to take over local drug trafficking operations. More than 60 people were killed in the struggle.
