Ryanair Aer Lingus ruling upheld

Europe’s second-highest court has upheld a decision by Brussels three years ago to block Ryanair’s attempt to buy Aer Lingus.

The General Court ruled on an appeal by Ryanair against the European Commission’s rejection of its takeover bid.

It said there were indeed valid concerns about domination of routes by the combined carriers which would have been monopolistic or very significant.

It also said the Commission had legal and factual justification not to order Ryanair to sell its shares in the Irish former state carrier after the bid failed.
