German shoppers more active

German retail sales posted their first monthly rise in three months in May. They were up 0.4 percent from April.

That boosted hopes that consumer spending may stabilise on the back of a job market recovery in Europe’s largest economy.

However compared with May last year, retail sales were down 2.4 percent. Economists had forecast a drop of 1.6 percent.
