Teenage sailor one step closer to home after rescue

Teenage sailor Abby Sunderland has arrived on the French island of Reunion, in the Indian Ocean, after being rescued while trying to sail around the world.

The 16-year-old from California was reunited with her older brother, Zac, who himself sailed around the world alone, at the age of 17, a year ago.

Other family members weren’t on the island to greet Abby. Her mother is due to give birth to her eighth child back home.

Sunderland says she hopes to attempt another circumnavigation soon.

“The past few months have really been the best months of my life,” Abby Sunderland said. “I’ve enjoyed almost every minute of my time out on the water. I am really dispappointed that things did not go as planned but I was on an adventure and you can only plan so far an adventure… It ended the trip, but it didn’t end the dream.”

Abby Sunderland’s voyage on her 40-foot yacht, Wild Eyes, began in January and was cut short on June 10, when she was caught in 8 meter waves in the southern Indian Ocean and her mast broke.

She was picked up by a French fishing boat two days later.
