French Minister under fire over L'Oreal heiress

A scandal surrounding the French Labour Minister and his links to the country’s richest woman, under investigation for tax fraud, is heating up.

Eric Woerth has came under fire, because it has emerged prosecutors warned the authorities, L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt might be dodging tax.

Woerth’s wife Florence helped manage Bettencourt’s fortune.

But Woerth says, he personally ordered a tax probe into Francois-Marie Banier, a society photographer accused of extracting gifts worth more than one billion euros from the L’Oreal heiress.

Eric Woerth has in the past led a crackdown on tax evasion. He is now fending off calls for his resignation.

His wife Florence insists she knew nothing of the alleged tax fraud but has confirmed she will step down from her job.

Secret recordings of conversations allegedly reveal Liliane Bettencourt conspired to hide money in Swiss bank accounts.

The tapes are the latest twist in a feud between the billionaire and her daughter, who claims Bettencourt is mentally unfit.

She has promised to declare all of her foreign assets to comply with the law.
