New iPhone sells at record rate

Apple says it sold more than 600,000 of its new iPhone model on the first day it was available in the US.

That was a record for just a single day of pre-orders, and came despite shortages and problems with overloaded online sales sites.

The device is on track to surpass sales of previous iPhone models.

The stellar demand sounds a strong challenge to rivals like Nokia which has just warned of weaker-than-expected sales.
