At this time of the year, south-eastern France is usually basking in sweltering heat.
But flash floods caused by torrential rain have led to the deaths of at least ten people and several more are missing.
“We were on the way home from work, and it took us by surprise. There were no warnings when we left the motorway so we just kept going but we got stuck.” said one woman in the village of Les Arcs.
Hundreds of people spent the night in temporary refuges because their homes were flooded.
