World Cup football provided the drama at London’s Apollo Theatre on Saturday night with a public screening of England’s match against the USA.

After a good first act, the night became something of a farce for fans when the English goalkeeper fluffed his lines and gifted the Americans an equaliser.

Critics left scathing reviews.

One fan called it a “very disappointing game. I don’t think we played the right system against them. Not enough good players on the pitch at a time. At the end of the day, they are not the greatest side in the world and we struggled to even beat them.”

It was not the best of days to be an Englishman in New York. The favourites, England were hoping to give the Americans a lesson in football, or soccer as it’s called in the local tongue.

Instead it was Uncle Sam who had the last laugh. One Team USA supporter said he believed his team had been underestimated:

“I’m thrilled with the draw because most people were expecting England to just win but you know what- give them a wake-up call, we can play.”
