Teenage US sailor Abby Sunderland has been rescued safely from her stricken yacht Wild Eyes in the remote southern Indian Ocean.
The teenage adventurer was spotted by Australian rescuers during an 11-hour search flight.
As the crew returned to Perth, they said the 16-year-old solo sailor was in good spirits.
“The weather in the area is very rough,” said search team leader William Blackshaw.
“The seas are very rough indeed. There is a lot of wind and she is obviously going to have a very uncomfortable night at sea, he added.“
A boat launched from the French fishing vessel Ile de la Reunion later reached her.
Two other ships also responded to her distress call.
It is likely she will be transferred to one of those ships, one of which is heading for the island of Reunion, a French possession in the Indian Ocean, and the other for Australia.
American Abby set off from California in January, hoping to become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe alone and nonstop.
When her family lost contact with her, many feared the worst.
