The greatest sporting event on earth is underway: the World Cup has kicked off with hosts South Africa drawing against Mexico 1-1.

Bafana Bafana took the lead in the 55th minute to the joy of the crowds watching on the big screens in central Johannesburg.

But Mexico’s Rafael Marquez struck back with an equaliser 12 minutes from time to claw back a point for his side.

Raymond Domenech’s France side face Uruguay in tonight’s evening game. Most pundits doubt Les Bleus will repeat their 2006 performance when they reached the final.

The tournament, which is expected bring in an estimated 400,000 vistors to South Africa, will be watched on television by hundreds of millions of football fans from some 215 countries.
