Russian manhunt for ‘Robin Hood’ killers

Security forces in Russia’s far east have captured an alleged member of an armed gang suspected of being behind a series of attacks on police.

The 18 year old is one of at least five men wanted over the murder of one policeman and for wounding three others in separate attacks. A police station was also burned.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor general’s office said the suspect was arrested during a major security operation in the Primorsky region.

The gang is said to be hiding in a forest. Local residents have been warned to be cautious.

Hundreds of police have been involved in the manhunt. Dozens patrolled the roads leading out of the capital Vladivostock, backed up by helicopters and even tanks.

According to one poll, 70% of people see the gang more as Robin Hood figures than bandits, fighting a just battle against a police force tainted by corruption.
