Kabul investigates wedding massacre

The Afghan President has ordered what he calls a “thorough investigation” into a bomb attack at a wedding which has left at least 40 people dead.

The Taliban has denied carrying out the attack near the southern city of Kandahar, which left dozens of people injured. A spokesman suggested NATO forces were responsible.

The US military says the killings were not the result of an airstrike and any suggestion to the contrary is what it calls “Taliban misinformation”. NATO condemned the attack and said it would help investigate.

Festive gatherings have been accidently hit by foreign forces in the past.

Afghan authorities say children were among those killed in the blast, which the police say was caused by a suicide bomber.

They say the wedding party was for a family with several members in the police force.
