It was a bad night for Jan Peter Balkenende and the Christian Democrats as the CDA share of the vote plummeted to an all time low.
The out-going prime minister accepted his role as fall guy for the disastrous showing.
“I have to let our party chairman know tonight that I directly resign my party membership and that I won’t take a place as a member in the lower parliament,” said Prime Minister Balkenende.
So it is the end of the road for the man who has headed four coalitions in the last eight years.
The last one may have fallen over the country’s involvement in Afghanistan, but on election night voters went for a fresh hand at the helm.
