Airbus orders take off at Berlin

The Berlin Air Show has opened with a huge success for Airbus as it unveiled an order for 32 of its superjumbo A380s from the Dubai based airline Emirates.

It is the largest ever commercial aircraft order by dollar value – potentially worth the equivalent of 9.3 billion euros.

Airbus also showed off the A400M military transport plane, which is now four years late and almost eight billion euros over budget.

Berlin is a biennial show that tends to be overshadowed by larger events and larger orders elsewhere.

It was opened by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who could have been in for a bumpy ride from the global aviation industry as she is proposing a new ecological tax on air travel.

It is the 100th edition of the Berlin Air Show with nearly 1,200 exhibitors from close to 50 countries and with 200,000 visitors expected.
