Pro-Palestinian rallies in Europe after Israeli raid

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Europe in protest at Israel’s deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship.

Nine activists were killed in Monday’s operation. In Paris, some French Jews took part alongside Muslims and others. France has Europe’s biggest Muslim and Jewish communities.

In London, protesters converged outside the Prime Minister’s official Downing Street residence, before marching to the Israeli embassy. They denounced the blockade on Gaza, imposed with the stated aim of stopping its Hamas rulers from bolstering their arsenal to fight Israel.

With the nine dead activists from Turkey, feelings were running particularly high in Istanbul. “Damn Israel”, “Murderer Israel”,“An Eye for an Eye,” demonstrators cried.

Even in Tel Aviv, thousands expresssed their anger at the Israeli raid. Left-wing Jews and Arabs took part in a rally originally called to protest the occupation of the Palestinian territories, on the 43rd anniversary of the Six Day War.
