A man has entered the main court in Brussels armed with a gun and shot a judge and her clerk dead.
The man, who Belgian police believe to be an Albanian, escaped on foot and is at large.
Brussels’ main court has always had low-level security which has been the subject of criticism and seen spectacular prisoner escapes in recent years.
The shootings happened at the end of the morning session.
“The unthinkable has happened. We know there’s violence and it happens very often in criminal and district courts, but now it’s in the civil chamber,” said one lawyer.
Police immediately sealed off the district in search of the assailant, who is believed to have been unhappy with a ruling against him several days ago.
