BP plough on with oil leak operation

BP have managed to overcome the latest hitch in the company’s efforts to curb the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

After the diamond tipped saw it was using to sever the riser pipe became stuck, engineers dislodged the tool and are replacing it with a rougher cutter.

However the operation, which could take 72 hours to complete, is only intended to collect some of the oil by syphoning it off to a waiting drilling ship on the Gulf’s surface.

The drilling of twin relief wells remains the more reliable way to plug the leak but they aren’t due to be ready until August.
