BP is preparing for yet another attempt to stop the massive spill from its leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico.
Engineers plan to place a containment cap over the so-called lower marine riser package – that is the piece of equipment that sits on top of the failed well blowout preventer on the sea bed.
Remote robots have already begun cutting away at pipes to allow for a tight fit with the cap.
After that, it is hoped most of the oil will be able to be piped to the surface.
Later today President Barack Obama is to hold his first meeting with the specially created “Oil Spill Commission” which is investigating the disaster and looking into the future for offshore drilling.
Meanwhile, the US attorney general is headed for Louisiana to see the damage for himself, prompting speculation that BP is to face possible criminal charges over the leak.
