Ford is reportedly considering a plan to eliminate its Mercury brand because of slumping sales.

Sources said the carmaker has been consulting with its US dealers about the move.

Ford, which expects to be solidly profitable this year, is in the process of selling Volvo to China’s Geely.

The elimination of Mercury would leave it with the Ford brand and its luxury marque Lincoln.
