Israeli air strikes on Gaza

Israel has carried out overnight air strikes on the Gaza Strip. A disused airport in the south and a Hamas training camp in the north were hit, according to security sources in the Islamist group.

Israel insists the strikes targeted tunnels used by militants, saying it acted in response to cross-border fire from the Hamas-controlled territory. A Palestinian group that identifies with al Qaeda has said it carried out earlier mortar and rocket attacks.

The Israeli air raids left more than a dozen people injured, according to Palestinian medical officials. A 15-year-old boy is said to have been seriously hurt.

Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for any attacks carried out from Gaza.
