Half a dozen Latin American presidents have gathered in Argentina to help the country mark an important moment in its history.

Celebrations are being held on the 200th anniversary of the May Revolution, which led to Argentina gaining independence from Spain.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said: “I want to tell you, friends and comrades, that on this 200th anniversary that Argentina has begun to celebrate, like in other bicentenaries, like the one I attended in Caracas, our people are doing much better than 100 years ago, despite what some people think. We are much better off than 100 years ago.”

Huge numbers have been turning out for events in the capital, including concerts, parades and firework displays.

One of the major events was the reopening of the refurbished Teatro Colon, which was once one of the world’s top opera houses.
