At least 13 people are now feared dead after severe flooding hit large swathes of Poland.
In the town of Swiniary about 100 kilometres north-west of the capital Warsaw a protective flood barrier broke on Monday forcing residents to flee their homes.
In all, some 4000 people across the region have been evacuated following the extreme downpours that have caused several rivers to burst their banks in the last week:
‘‘Water came into the house, everything is flooded,’‘ one man said.
‘‘We lost everything, everything. Nothing could be saved,’‘ said another woman:
Several areas across Poland remain on high alert, particularly near to the river Vistula. Although, water levels have receded the army is desperately trying to shore up dykes that are under threat of collapse.
