Suspected ETA military chief arrested in France

The suspected head of ETA’s military wing has been arrested in southwest France. Mikel Kabikoitz Karrera Sarobe was detained with two other ETA suspects.

It follows a raid on an apartment in Bayonne, in which police say weapons were found. Two further arrests were made nearby, in connection with the joint French-Spanish operation.

One of the men being held is thought to be Arkaitz Aguirregabiria del Barrio, who is suspected of involvement in a fatal shooting near Paris. Gunned down in March, Jean-Serge Nerin was the first French policeman to be killed by ETA.

Amid shock over his death, President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed France would rid itself of all bases used by the armed Basque separatist group and “hunt down” its supporters.
