Scientists pit their wits against the volcano

Global disruption caused by Iceland’s continually erupting volcano is beginning to wear a bit thin. Hence some weird and wonderful ways of stopping Mother Nature in her tracks.
 
One hypothetical scenario involves plugging the volcano with a giant ice sheet until the eruption ends.
 
Back in the real world, it is not just air travellers who are facing upheaval. Livestock grazing in the surrounding mountains are having to be moved to uncontaminated pastures.
 
It is a massive undertaking as a local farmer explains.
 
“It is unfortunate because sheep have a tendency to return to familiar pastures where they grew up,” said Gudni Thorvaldsson. “So sometimes they wander long distances looking for home. We are just hoping the fences keep them from going too far.”
